Fremantle Highway — Anatomy of a Late Rescue

The Dutch Safety Board's 2025 report on the Fremantle Highway blamed the rescue, not the cars: seven crew jumped ~30 m and one died.

On 25 July 2023 the car carrier Fremantle Highway caught fire in the North Sea with about 3,783 vehicles aboard — up to 500 of them electric. One crew member died and seven jumped from roughly 30 metres into the water. The Dutch Safety Board's May 2025 report did not blame the cars. It blamed the rescue.

Why the cause was never the headline

The most-asked question — did an EV start it? — the report deliberately did not answer. The Dutch Safety Board's remit was the emergency response; the fire's cause sits with Panama as flag state and remains unresolved in public.
