Port Fire or Mid-Ocean: Which Is Worse?

Different catastrophes: a port fire kills responders who should never have entered, while a mid-ocean fire is a total loss with no help for days.

Neither is winnable late — they just fail in different currencies. A car-carrier fire at the berth brings help in minutes, but the danger shifts to the people who respond: at Port Newark in 2023, two firefighters who entered a smoke-filled deck of the Grande Costa d'Avorio died. A mid-ocean fire brings no help for days, so the ship, its cargo and the environment pay instead — the Felicity Ace and the Morning Midas both burned and sank. Same peril, two different catastrophes.

The port fire: help arrives, and can become the casualty

At a berth the cavalry is close — shore fire services, tugs, unlimited water — but municipal crews are rarely trained for ships, and that gap is where people die. On the Grande Costa d'Avorio at Port Newark (5 July 2023), a Jeep Wrangler being used as a cargo 'pusher' overheated and ignited on an interior garage deck, spreading to nearby vehicles. Two Newark firefighters became lost in the smoke-filled deck and died; six other responders were injured. The NTSB found the local department had little to no maritime firefighting training and that crews should never have entered — the correct action was to close the boundary (the Deck 12 door) and let the ship's fixed CO₂ system work with the crew. Fast help turned into a line-of-duty tragedy.

The mid-ocean fire: no one is coming

At sea the trade-off inverts — no bystanders to lose, but no reinforcement either. Specialist firefighting tugs and salvors are concentrated near hubs, not spread along blue-water routes. The Morning Midas burned from 3 June 2025 with the first tug six days out and a specialist firefighting tug twelve days out; it sank on 23 June, roughly 360 nautical miles from land. The Felicity Ace (2022) sank with about 4,000 vehicles and an estimated cargo loss above $400 million. The crew and the ship's fixed systems are the entire firefighting force, and when they lose, the loss is total — hull, cargo, and a pollution-and-wreck tail a berth fire rarely carries.

So which is worse? It depends what you're counting

They are different catastrophes, not a bigger and a smaller one. A port fire's worst outcome is measured in lives and liability — dead responders, injured crews, port infrastructure at risk, general average, and a city fire service exposed to a vessel it was never trained to enter. A mid-ocean fire's worst outcome is measured in assets and environment — a constructive total loss, wreck removal, and oil moving toward a coastline. An underwriter prices them on different lines; a master fears them for different reasons. Ranking them misses the point that a car carrier is exposed to both.

The port fire threatens the people who come to help; the mid-ocean fire threatens the ship because no one can. Neither is the 'safe' one — they just send the bill to different places.

Both are decided in the same first minutes

The one thing the two scenarios share is where the outcome is actually set — early, and long before a fire truck or a tug matters. At the berth, catching a fault before it fills a deck with smoke is what keeps anyone from having to send an untrained crew in after it; the Newark deaths followed a manual entry that early containment would have made unnecessary. At sea, catching the cell before it becomes a full-deck fire is the only version that stays a crew job rather than a salvage case. In both, the lever is the same: early, located detection and a disciplined 'fixed first' response — not the cavalry, which either arrives untrained or does not arrive at all.

What it means for owners and underwriters

For operators, planning that assumes 'we're near port, help will come' and planning that assumes 'we're alone out here' end at the same control: find the fire early and do not force a bad manual entry. For underwriters, the two scenarios load different covers — liability and injury at the berth; hull, cargo, wreck and pollution at sea — but the same upstream mitigant compresses both tails, because detection that shortens the fault-to-response interval is what keeps a fire inside the window the crew can still handle. A car carrier's fire risk is not one place or the other. It is both, and both are lost in the first minutes or not at all.
